Brothers

~
So much love between you two
always ready to take his tiny outstretched hand or to hold him up on unsteady feet
delighting in every smile, laugh, and new discovery he makes, you are proud
never cross if he pulls your hair or demands my attention away
always there and always loving
you are an amazing brother and I am proud.

~ a portrait of my children, once a week, every week in 2013 ~

Tsoknyi: The ground has been in a constant state of wetness, not being able to walk yet this has left you with little opportunity to explore the outside on your own. Today though, we discovered that you were content just standing against the stone wall and discovering everything within your tiny reach.

Dawa: Home from school and exuberant after a sleepover last night on your friends boat.

Acorn Faeries

The children and I were on our way home from town when my older son, Dawa stopped suddenly,
grabbed my sleeve and pointed silently to one of the bushes leading up to our drive.
In a moment I had spotted them too, the two tiny acorn faeries.
We stood perfectly still, watching as they played and gathered the last berries
off the bare branches. After some time we were spotted too though,
and they darted up higher into the branches of a nearby oak.
The little ones and I smiled at each other and finished our walk home in silence,
not wanting to break the bit of fairy magic we had witnessed.

Tsoknyi: is in love with Rakini and she patiently tolerates him as he relentlessly tries to grab handfuls of her soft fur. "Gently" has become our mantra these days.

Dawa: So tired on these dark winter days, every morning it is a challenge to rise and meet the day.

A faerie in the studio

I sat down in the studio last night after putting the children to bed, intent on a productive night's work. However, no sooner had I picked up my pencil then I saw a timid little face peering out from behind one of the books on my shelf. "Hello," I said, a little surprised, "Who are you?" The small thing blushed and a tinkly little voice answered, "Willa," then disappeared immediately back behind the book. After some coaxing she finally ventured out onto my desk and accepted my offer of dried pineapple. Before very long she was just as outgoing and inquisitive as any five year old human child I've met (and just as intent on commanding my full and complete attention!)  I watched pirouettes across my sketch book, a perfect curtsy on a spool of thread, and answered a continuous flow of questions. I tried to get some work done too but it was no use. When I picked up my pencil Willa danced up and playfully made off with it, deciding she wanted to draw too. I sighed, giving up hope of getting any real work done, and picked up my camera instead to capture a little of Willa's mischief. Finally in the wee hours of the morning, with a little makeshift sack full of dried pineapple slung over her back, she disappeared back where she came from and I at last crawled sleepily into bed.

Here is Willa.

A day off the rock

We woke early to the most stunning sunrise (alas this is not our view, but the view off the front deck of the house we are visiting).
I wrapped the kids up warm for a big day in the city and we headed down to the village to catch the ferry over to Victoria.
This is usually a bi-yearly trip for us, we get by just fine on our little island most of the time.
Eventually though our list of off-island errands gets long enough to warrant the trip and by that time I'm usually in need of a city fix too.
The baby slept on the ferry so Dawa and I got to read several chapters from Moominpappa at Sea  (definitely one of my favourites in the series, and if you haven't read the Moomin books yet you must!).
Once in the city we wandered the streets, window shopped, and ran our errands. He ate a giant chocolate cookie covered with sprinkles (oh my!) and I drank Bombay spice chai and watched all the passers by, soaking up the city and savouring my day with the boys.
The ride to the ferry is just over an hour. Dawa snagged the front seat of the double decker bus for the second time this trip but within ten minutes was fast asleep. Soki on the other hand managed to wiggle and squirm for the entire time, preforming an amazing array of yogic feats to the amusement of other passengers. All in all a wonderful day, and I am so so ready for bed.

2013 :: Make it Happen

I am SO excited for 2013! New years eve usually slips quietly by in our home without much fuss, no midnight celebrations, no resolutions, one year just changes over to the next. This year that's going to change though! I'm all about setting my goals, achieving my dreams and dreaming big! The last few years have been a challenge, financially, emotionally--everything, and it's time for a change. I can feel it in my bones. I was so inspired by Erin of bluebirdbaby's '2013 Make it Happen' challenge that I sat the family down last night after dinner and we wrote out all of our dreams and plans for 2013. I wrote down everything I want to do this year, for my family, my business, my relationship, and for myself! It felt so good to see it down on paper, and to be dreaming of what we want to accomplish together. Then we put everything into a jar for safe keeping until 2014. The jar will live on my studio shelf, a daily reminder to keep moving towards my dreams and making them a reality. I totally believe in positive thinking and that we can manifest our dreams and the life we want, so it's about time I started! Thank you Erin for summing it up so beautifully as always!

In the spirit of a fresh start I've started to go through the house and am getting rid of everything that isn't essential to our lives. I can't wait to see what this year has in store!

Once upon a time

As the boys and I have been falling more and more into the world of fairytales on these cold winter nights there has been a pool of inspiration welling up in me. I've created a few fairytale inspired creatures in the past but there are so many wonderful characters I would still love to make, where to start?
